Legend goes that the city is named after the nectar that flowed from Lord Shiva’s hair as blessing. With such a quaint beginning, it is not surprising that the town is lively and colourful, given to rituals and processions. The Meenakshy-Sundareshwar temple is ostentatious and labyrinthine with colourful effigies of mythological figures and gold-topped pinnacles. If you have to visit a stunning temple destination in Southern India, let it be Madurai.

Kumarakom - The Land of Backwaters

People usually say ‘Kerala’ and ‘Backwaters’ in one breath. Kumarakom is one of the most visited backwater destinations. The verdant backwaters comprise a confusing maze of inland waterways flanked by the famous verdant greenery, yes, but also a lifestyle that remains hidden. Traditional kettu vallam boats glide through, making you see these glorious sights. The backwaters are the lifeblood of God’s own country, its veins that give Kerala its character. Perched like an island on the Vembanad Lake, visit Kumarakom for the Bird Sanctuary that has migrant birds flying from as far as Siberia. Lush tropical waterways abound here, as does verdant backwater wilderness.

Thekkady - The home of Mighty Elephants

Manali - A Quaint Hill Town in Himachal

Manali, Himachal Pradesh


Manali is a quaint hill town, located 40 kms north of Kullu Valley. Perched 1928 m, above the sea level, Manali is a perfect destination for discerning travellers and adventure seekers. Earlier, Manali was a village called ‘Dana Agha’, even today traces of that period can be found in the town.

Set along the banks of Beas River, Manali abounds with natural gifts like beautiful landscape, pine and deodar forests, snow-capped peaks, steep cliffs, rolling valleys, adventure and mystery. Hadimba Temple: Hadimba Temple also called Dhungri Temple has historic as well as archaeological importance. One can reach this temple on foot or by hiring cars or taxis that ply along the Bipasha and take you to the temple gate. Dedicated to goddess Hadimba, the temple was built by Maharaja Bahadur Singh in 1553. The 27 metre high temple is made of wood and has four-tiered pagoda type roof and the well-decorated front gate which comprises the images and symbols.

Tibetan Monastery: Tibetan Monastery is another major attraction of the town. The monastery has a good collection of Tibetan paintings and handicrafts.

Gadhan Takechokling Gumfa: Located next to Tibetan Monastery, Gadhan Takechokling Gumfa was constructed in 1969. The cave has an idol of Shakyamuni.

Manali Mountaineering Institute: Manali Mountaineering Institute offers basic and advance training courses for adventure sports like mountaineering, trekking, skiing and plenty of water sports. Skiing and trekking equipments can be hired here by advance booking.

Manali Club House: Manali Club House lies 2 km from the main town on the left bank of Manalsu Nallah. Around the Club House there are fine spots for picnic, where you can pass a good time. Cultural events are also organized in the auditorium of Club House.

Manu Temple: Just 3 kms from the main market in Old Manali, there is a temple dedicated to Manu Rishi, the creator of human race on the earth.

Solang Valley (13 km): Solang Valley is situated between Solang village and Beas Kund. The picturesque valley has some fine ski slopes, where you can undertake the adventure sports. For adventure seekers there is also a Ski lift here for skiing training. The winter skiing festival is also organized at Solang Valley.

Rahala Waterfalls (16 kms): Rahala Water Falls is located 16 kms away on way to Rohtang Pass. The water fall is famous as a picnic spot.

Rohtang Pass (51 kms): Rohtang Pass is situated on Keylong - Leh Highway at an altitude of 3,979 mts. A gateway to Lahaul, Spiti, Pangi and Leh Valley, Rohtang Pass remains open from during summers, from June to October. From Rohtang Pass you can enjoy spectacular view of glaciers, peaks and the Chandra River flowing down in the Lahaul valley. Close to Rohtang Pass are the twin peaks of Geypan.

Besides, Lalbagh has one of the largest collections of tropical and sub-tropical plants in India.

Cubbon Park: Cubbon Park was laid out in 1864 and is full of flowering trees spreading over an area of 120 hectares. The the park area one can see the red Gothic building which houses the Public Library, the High Court, the Government Museum and the Technological and Industrial Museum.

Government Museum: Situated on Kasturba road, Government Museum is one of the oldest museums in India. Established in 1886, the museum has sections on geology, art, numismatics and relics from Mohenjodaro (one of the cradles of Indian civilisation), dating back to 5000 years.

Technological and Industrial Museum: This museum is also situated on Kasturba road close to the Government Museum. The theme of the museum is the application of science of technology to industry and human welfare. The museum is open daily between 10 am to 5 pm (close on Mondays and public holidays).

Vidhana Soudha: Considered one of the most spectacular buildings of the city and the country alike, Vidhana Soudha houses both the Secretariat and the State Legislature. The building is built of granite in the neo-Dravidian style of architecture. Major attraction of the building is the cabinet room, which is known for its huge door made of sandalwood. Visitors are allowed to Vidhana Soudha only after 5.30 pm and prior permission must be obtained to see the interior.

Bangalore Fort: Bangalore Fort is located on Krishnarajendra road close to the city market. Built in 1537 by Kampegowda, the fort was originally a mud-brick structure. In the 18th century it was rebuilt by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan but much of the fort was destroyed during the wars with the British. Today the fort is mostly in ruins but it deserves a visit, and you would be missing little if you left it out of your itinerary.

Bull Temple: Bull Temple, one of the oldest temples of Bangalore, lies on Bugle Hill at the end of Bull Temple Road. Built by Kempegowda in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple contains a huge monolith of Nandi. Non-Hindus are allowed inside the Bull temple and priests are very friendly.

Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace: Situated on Albert Victor Road, this palace was started by Hyder Ali and later completed by his son Tipu in 1791. Adjacent to this massive palace there is an interesting temple.

Weekend Getaways from Chennai

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu is one of the most popular tourist destinations of South India. Earlier known as ‘Madras’, Chennai is home to a number of old and new attractions, including some magnificent old structures. Of course, Chennai offers almost everything to please the tourists, but you may get exhausted due to hustle and bustle across the ctiy. Hence, while you are vacationing in Chennai, make sure to take excursions to nearby tourists places. Set at a close distance from Chennai, these weekend getaways provide a welcome break to you.

Covelong : Just 40 km from Chennai, Covelong offers a welcome break from maddening crowds of Chennai. Covelong is famous for its adventure sports activities like windsurfing, swimming, fishing and other water sports. A fishing village, Covelong has beautiful palm fringed beach which attracts people from far and wide. The tranquil environs and the infrastructure of the Covelong beach, make it one of the most popular beach resorts on the Coromandel Coast. Besides beaches, Covelong is dotted with the historical monuments likes forts, churches, mosques etc. Dutch fort and Catholic Church are other important attractions of Covelong.

Mammalapuram : A small coastal town, Mammalapuram lies 58 kms away from Chennai. From Chennai you can go to Mammalapuram by rail via Chengalpattu. A good motorable road links Chennai with Mammalapuram. You can reach Mammalapuram by driving on your own or catching buses. An ancient place, Mammalapuram was the second capital of the Pallava dynasty during the 7th century. One of the most beautiful towns in South India, Mammalapuram is known for its ancient temples and boulder studded beaches.

Mammalapuram is popular for its rath temples (chariot temples), each carved out for a single monolith representing one of the Pandava heroes of Mahabharata, having the characteristic Dravidian-style gopurams (towers), a pillared hall and sculpted friezes on the walls. Meenakshi Temple, Shore Temple and Arjuna’s Penance are other highlights of the town. An annual festival, Mammalapuram Dance Festival is held here between mid-Jan and mid-Feb. During the festival the Indian Classical Dance forms of Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi and Kathakali dance forms are presented. Puppet shows and tribal dances, folk and classical music concerts are the highlight of Pongal celebrated in the same month.

Kanchipuram : One of the seven holy cities of the Hindus, Kanchipuram is situated at a distance of 75 kms from Chennai. Kanchipuram was the capital of the great Cholas, Pallavas and the Vijaynagar dynasties, who altogether built thousands temples in the town. Once the ‘City of Thousand Temples,’ Kanchipuram now houses 126 intricately carved temples. Ekambareswar Temple, Vaikuntha Perumal Temple, Varadaraja Temple, Kailasnatha Temple and Kamakshi Amman Temple are some of the prominent temples of Kanchipuram.

Besides temples, Kanchipuram is known for famous Kanjeevaram silk. While visit Kanchipuram, check out silk sarees and other silk made clothes spectacularly shot through with gold zari threads. You may visit a silk weaving center such as the Handloom Weavers' Service Centre on Railway Station Road or walk down the dusty lanes to see around 5000 families involved in this ancient craft.

Tirupati : Tirupati is located at a distance of 152 km from Chennai, in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. One of the most popular Hindu shrines of the country, Tirupati is the abode of the legendary Lord of the Seven Hills. It is said that an uninterrupted worship of the Lord had been carried out hare over thirteen centuries. Tirupati is dotted with a number of temples which draw thousands of people throughout the year. Some of the main attractions of the town are the Pratima Mandapam and Tirumalanayaka Mandapam.

Pondicherry : Situated 162 km south of Chennai, Pondicherry is well-connected by rail and bus. Pondicherry is a lovely place, here the last vestiges of French influence in India flourishes with traditional South Indian culture. On one side of the canal you will find European influence, while on the other side a typical South Indian town lies.

Pondicherry houses a number of churches such as the the 300 year old Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception; the church to Our Lady of Angels and the gothic Sacred Heart Church. The town has numerous temples dedicated to Ganesh and the Vinaynagar Manakula temple. Pondicherry is well-known for the Aurobindo Ashram set up by the Mother, a disciple of Shree Aurobindo and Auroville. Botanical Gardens, Jawahar Toy Museum and Pondicherry Museum are other must visit places at Pondicherry.

Kodaikanal : Kodaikanal is 520 km from Chennai and the drive takes around 12 hours. One of the most picturesque hill stations of South India, Kodaikanal is set an elevation of 2,133 m above sea level. Kodaikanal is situated in the Palani Hills of the Western Ghats and is bestowed with pleasant weather round the year. Lush green hill slopes, shimmering waterfalls, dense forests, fruit orchards and a lovely lake made Kodaikanal a picture perfect spot.
